Vinous 93 - (a 60/40 blend of malbec and cabernet, from vines planted in 1935): Good full red-ruby. Aromas of black raspberry, earth and mint are sexed up by new French oak notes of coffee, mocha and cedar. The palate offers a sophisticated combination of rich, lush texture and restrained sweetness, with the raspberry, currant and licorice flavors lifted by enticing mineral/floral perfume. This gripping, vibrant, classy wine finishes with smooth tannins that dust the entire mouth.

An Outstanding Example of Classic Rhone Expression from One of the Regions True Icons

This is a wine I've always enjoyed. J.L. Chave's 'Mon Coeur' serves as a clear expression of the Rhone Valley as a whole, and this new vintage is another gem. Made of approximately equal parts Syrah and Grenache with vines age between 20-60 years old, sourced from select vineyards around the Northern Rhone growing region, and made by the legendary 16 generation Chave family. The wine is distinctly Chave, with aromas of smokey blueberries, leather, briny olive, crushed violets, and exotic spices. On the palate it's lively and fresh, texture is refined and well structured with flavors of blackberry, espresso, fresh herbs, with a lasting finish rich with earth and smoky spice. An excellent accompaniment to your favorite cheeses and charcuterie. Believe me when we say this drinks well above its price point!
