(Domaine Louis Boillot Et Fils Gevrey-chambertin Les Cherbaudes 1er Cru Red) (aging in 33% new oak; these vines just under Mazis-Chambertin are now 104 years old, according to Boillot): "Bright ruby-red. Very ripe but youthfully brooding aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and stone. Then surprisingly fat, pliant and sweet in the mouth, with its dark cherry and black raspberry fruit displaying outstanding creamy depth and volume. Wonderfully rich, seamless and relaxed, finishing with utterly suave tannins and terrific length, if not yet quite the complexity of the Champonnets. But that will come with time. This wine struck me as more relaxed than Boillot's 2016s from frost-affected vines on the Côte de Beaune. A splendid Gevrey premier cru in the making."

"A pretty, fresh and spicy nose is composed by liqueur-like aromas of plum and both red and dark cherry. The exceptionally rich, concentrated and voluminous flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also buffers the borderline chewy tannins that shape the impressively lengthy and powerful finish. This is a big but seductive Gevrey 1er and plenty of patience will be needed."

"The Cherbaudes, from 104 year old vines in a parcel adjacent to Jean-Marie Fourrier’s, is the king of the Boillot cellar in 2016 and one of the finest Gevrey premiers crus I tasted. A brooding bouquet of sapid dark fruit, raw cocoa and savoury bass notes introduces a full-bodied, complete wine with beautifully enrobed, rich tannins and lovely depth and energy. Three barrels produced."
