Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy, 2019 Côte de Nuits Report (10/1/2020)
(Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Henri Magnien, Red) "Fine deep purple, with a significantly plumper nose here. The fruit comes from 8 lieux dits, the vines aged from 40 to 100 years. Sumptuous deep raspberry with some ripe strawberry on top, harmonious rich but graceful too. A lovely expression. Some spicy notes too as Henri Magnien (Charles’ grandfather) liked. 90-92 points"
Henri Magnien Description
"Charles Magnien is the twelfth generation at his family’s domaine in Gevrey Chambertin. They have six hectares of vines, mostly in Gevrey in some key parcels, Ruchottes, Lavaut Saint Jacques, Cazetiers, and Champeaux. The famous vineyards garner the attention, but equally as rich as the land is the old vines. In 1850, the family discovered a mutation of Pinot Noir, which was named after the family, Pinot Magnien. The Pinot Magnien is a part of the blend in their Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes cuvee where the oldest vines are 100 years-old. Charles took over from his father in 2009 and immediately invested his energy and efforts in the vineyards where he is working with a higher canopy. He is following organic agriculture, but will treat if necessary. Charles Magnien is the first in his family to bottle all of the wine that they grow and now with more than ten vintages under his belt, the Henri Magnien wines are quickly becoming recognized as some of the best in the village." Burghound, Jan-21, Issue #81
(Domaine Henri Magnien et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Villages Red) "A mildly toasty nose speaks of poached plum, game, underbrush and plenty of sauvage character. The delicious, intense and well-detailed flavors flash even more minerality on the sappy, austere and balanced finish that is sufficiently structured to suggest that this well-made villages will need most of a decade to arrive at its apogee. Also well-worth checking out. (Drink starting 2027) 89-92 points"

Vinous, La Lumière Noire: 2019 Burgundy - Côte de Nuits (Dec 2020) (12/1/2020)
(Domaine Henri Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Red) "The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes comes from eight plots between 40 and 100 years old and includes 25% whole bunch. That stem addition is seamlessly integrated on the nose and allows the almost boisterous black cherry and raspberry scents to flourish. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, sweet and candied in style but judiciously spiced and very well structured on the long, saline finish. This is a stylish Gevrey-Chambertin. (Drink between 2024-2045) 92 points"
