"The 2011 Mas La Plana is still in its infancy, with sweet black cherry fruit, cocoa powder and tobacco taking centre stage. The support act comes from gorgeously round, binding tannins, a dry savoury edge, and a long gourmand finish. This weighs in at 14.5%, so there is power but the overwhelming sense is one of elegance and richness combined, not least because the oak has been beautifully integrated and the fruit is so pure. Needs a lot more time to reveal its true majesty."

The 2011 Mas La Plana is a textbook warm climate Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the first ever produced in Spain. It's a ripe vintage (warm harvest), but the wine shows restraint and balance, with classical blackberry and cigar box aromas—in line with the 2010 vintage that was also excellent. It has fine, classical Cabernet tannins and good acidity. Nicely balanced and ready for a good development in bottle. Some 91,000 bottles, 2,300 magnums and some larger formats produced.

This polished red is focused and harmonious, with plum, cassis, licorice, tobacco and mineral notes that mingle gracefully over well-integrated tannins. Marries density and freshness, presenting a long, savory finish. Drink now through 2026. 600 cases imported. — TM
